CS Cavity Sliders in Financial HQ

Case Study: New York Financial Headquarters Uses CS AutoCav Smart Access Control Systems

Discover how this New York financial headquarters used automatic pocket doors, CS AutoCav, to transform smart access control into a modern office environment. With over 60 installations, the building integrated BMS connectivity, RFID security, and acoustic privacy to support high-performance commercial workflows. This case study reveals how automated sliding doors improve space efficiency, security, and architectural clarity in next-generation corporate design.

Designing for a New Era of Corporate Space

A landmark financial headquarters redefining the future of workplace design through intelligent automation and architectural precision.

A confidential redevelopment of a major bank headquarters in New York City represents a defining shift in how financial institutions are rethinking the modern workplace.

The CEO envisioned a “building with incredible light, 360-degree views, and spacious layouts,” establishing a clear expectation: this would not be a conventional headquarters, but a statement in modern commercial architecture.

Tasked with high expectations, the project team led the design focusing on three guiding principles:

  • Maximize natural daylight penetration
  • Enhance spatial efficiency across all floors
  • Create a highly flexible and future-ready workplace environment

This resulted in a design defined by soaring 11–15 foot ceilings, expansive floor-to-ceiling glazing, and open-plan circulation zones that prioritize visual transparency and human experience.

However, achieving this level of openness introduced a critical challenge: how to integrate doors and access control systems without disrupting the architectural clarity of the space.

The Challenge

Why Traditional Door Systems Were Not Enough

Conventional automatic swing doors and standard commercial door systems quickly became incompatible with the design intent.

Some issues were:

  • Visual interruption in glass-heavy elevations
  • Spatial inefficiency due to swing clearance requirements
  • Limitations in high-design, open-plan layouts
  • Reduced flexibility in zoning and circulation planning

In a building where every line of sight mattered, even small architectural interruptions became significant design compromises.

The project required a different category of solution: one that could disappear into the architecture itself.

The Solution

The Role of the CS AutoCav System in the Design Vision

This is where the CS AutoCav automatic pocket door system became central to the project strategy.

At the time of installation, the project utilized the CS AutoCav Commercial, the predecessor of what is now called the CS AutoCav Pro. The system is designed for commercial spaces, with expanded automation control, integration capability, and design flexibility.

What made the system essential was not just automation but its ability to disappear into the architecture.

The recessed pocket door design allows door panels to fully retract into the wall cavity, ensuring that when open, they become invisible from sight. This preserved uninterrupted sightlines across large interior spans and maintained the purity of the architectural glazing strategy.

What Sets Us Apart

Access Control Customization is the Deciding Factor for Commercial Spaces

While many automatic door systems exist in the commercial market, the project requirements demanded a level of customization that went beyond standard offerings.

The project team required precise control over:

  • Door behavior across different zones
  • Integration with building management systems
  • Security and access control logic
  • Architectural constraints across multiple floor plates
  • Aesthetic consistency across highly visible spaces

After evaluating leading global manufacturers, the project team determined that no other automatic sliding door provider could deliver the required level of customization and system flexibility.

The CS AutoCav system was ultimately selected as the only solution capable of aligning with both the architectural vision and the operational requirements of a high-security financial headquarters.

Integration with the Building Management Systems (BMS)

Throughout the building, the CS AutoCav Pro was integrated into the broader smart building ecosystem. These systems were coordinated through building management infrastructure (BMS) to support:

  • Secure employee credential zones
  • Controlled executive access areas
  • Flexible meeting room scheduling environments
  • Wellness and private support spaces

For projects requiring greater flexibility, the AutoCav Pro offers extended cabling options that simplify integration across large floorplates and complex office layouts. Dry-wire inputs can be configured to hold doors open or hold doors closed based on operational requirements, allowing doors to respond intelligently to security schedules, occupancy conditions, and building events.

In the event of a power outage, the system's battery-backed power cart helps maintain operation, ensuring critical access points remain functional when needed most. The AutoCav Pro can also be connected directly to fire alarm systems, allowing doors to automatically respond according to emergency life-safety protocols.

This level of customization enables architects, security consultants, and facility managers to specify automatic pocket doors that actively support building operations, rather than simply providing automated opening and closing functions.

Fail-Safe Design Features

Beyond design and aesthetics, system reliability was essential.

The CS AutoCav system was designed with emergency resilience in mind, including:

• Up to 3 days of backup battery operation

• Manual override capability for emergency egress

• Fail-safe functionality during power interruption

This ensured that even in unexpected conditions, the building maintained safe and controlled access.

Soundproofing Offices with CS SoundStop

Another essential requirement in this New York headquarters project was acoustic control in high-traffic, high-function areas.

To meet this requirement, the CS SoundStop Cavity Slider frame was custom-ordered from New Zealand to pair with the CS AutoCav Pro, enabling integrated automation with high-performance acoustic separation. When paired with lead-lined panels, the system achieves an STC rating of up to 43, delivering sound insulation comparable to solid-core doors while maintaining the spatial flexibility of a sliding pocket system.

Selected areas of the building incorporated acoustic-sensitive design zones, including:

  • Executive offices
  • Conference rooms
  • Focus workspaces
  • Phone and private consultation rooms
  • Wellness and decompression spaces

The combination of automated pocket doors and acoustic treatment systems allowed the project to achieve a rare balance: open architectural transparency with controlled acoustic separation.

The Role of Automated Pocket Doors in Next-Generation Workplace Design

Ultimately, this project highlighted a critical distinction in the market: while many suppliers offer automatic door systems, only a limited number can deliver fully customized, architecturally integrated automation at this scale.

The CS AutoCav system was selected not as a standard off-the-shelf product, but as a tailored solution engineered specifically to meet the demands of a landmark financial headquarters in one of the most design-sensitive commercial environments in the world.

Across the building, over 60 CS AutoCav units were installed, reflecting the scale of adoption and the growing demand for automated, touch-free, and privacy-focused door solutions in modern commercial office environments.
